Day 217: “Cheer Up”
Sad days
Can be made better
By playing “Jolene”
And singing to your cat
Day 217: “Cheer Up”
Sad days
Can be made better
By playing “Jolene”
And singing to your cat
Day 156: “Grief Has No Age Limit”
Younger me
is grieving too
Grieving her kitty
Grieving her best friend
Grieving the sweet kitten she found in the tree out front
The one she fed and brought home
The one she cuddled with
And made a space for
The one she came home to from school
And pet
And chatted with
The one she listened to purring
As she drifted off to sleep
Younger me needs to curl up
With her stuffed animals
Watch “Hannah Montana”
And cry
Day 141: “Ginger Ale”
The mountains, the porch swing
The breeze as the sky gets dark
You come, scratch my back
Sit next to me
We look at the stars starting to become visible in the sky
We sit in silence
Admiring the beauty
The closeness
After a while, it’s cold enough that we go inside
Surprising for Arizona
You ask if you can get me anything
I think of all the treats and treasures here
Peanut M&Ms
Rice Krispies
Icebreakers
But I say, “Ginger ale, please”
You go to the other fridge
The one by the garage
And come back with two in hand
We sit on the couch, drinking ginger ale
and watching Shirley Temple
You scratch my back
Day 127: “Stuffed Animals”
“Toy Story”
made me believe in the not-yet-seen
taught me empathy
I thought my stuffed animals were alive
I’d memorize where I left them
Sometimes putting them in crazy positions
Challenging them
To be the same when I returned
I said goodbye to them
Tried to cuddle them all equally
Told them I loved them
I never did catch them moving
Now I know they’re not alive
They can’t move
They don’t speak when I’m not there
But that doesn’t mean they don’t have feelings
So I still say goodbye to them
Try to cuddle them all equally
And tell them I love them
Day 109: “Jumping”
Growing up
I didn’t know how to jump
I’d try and try
but would only ever get to my tippy toes
My gymnastics coaches would cheer and shout
As I ran down the trampoline
Never picking both feet off the ground at the same time
You know, jumping
But eventually I did learn
I can’t say I can get great elevation
or distance
or anything
But I can propel myself up
And lift my two feet off the ground
You know, jump
Now I do 50 jumps every day
My younger me would be so proud
Well, actually she thought she was jumping too
Didn’t realize her toes were still on the ground
She wasn’t the brightest
Day 106: “Snow Falling”
Snow falling
Stops time
Makes everything beautiful
Gives me butterflies
Giddy
Fluttering butterflies
It brings me back to being a kid
Seeing my school district flash by on the news
No school!
Watching the snow fall
Blanketing the world
Taking sheet pans out to the driveway
Using them as makeshift sleds
Building an igloo in the plowed snow on the side of the road
Now I sit
Watching the snow fall
Feeling like a little kid
Day 88: “This Time of Year”
This time of year
feels like a warm hug
a cup of hot cocoa, when the marshmallow sticks to your lip
sitting on the vent with a blanket, filling it up with warm air
finding the perfect gift
when your face just starts getting numb after walking in the cold, making it harder to form words
staying up all night praying for a snow day
string lights cozifying your place
your cat trying to eat the artificial tree
candles, lots and lots of candles
bundling up just to still have your toes feel cold
nostalgia, so much nostalgia it hurts
music that makes you feel young, loved, comfortable
warmth emanating from everywhere
It just feels like magic
Day 72: “Yearning”
Ready for the fall
The leaves falling
A new color palette
That brings warmth, comfort
A cozy night in
Apple cider
The rain splattering outside
Watching “Coraline”
Feeling so much nostalgia it hurts
Can it please be fall already?
Day 71: “Reminders”
A back scratch
The mountains
A white purse
Porch swings
Fruit
Dominoes
Shirley Temple
Peanut M&Ms
Expired goods
Jokes
Eggshells
Ginger ale
Shih tzus
Motor homes
Cacti
White sandals
All things that remind me of my grandma
Day 66: “Lorde & Savior”
I press play
Close my eyes
Breathe
I’m transported
to 2017
“Melodrama” CD blasting
Feeling new feelings
Maturing
Freeing
Enjoying the summer
For once
When I open my eyes
It’s not 2017
It’s now
Still hot as heck
But
Somehow I can tolerate the heat
When I’m listening to “Virgin”
I feel free
Fed
Awake
Confident
Grown
Alive
Capable
Cool
Lorde might just have saved my summer
